Like when the main character, David, said he’s “intense like a lion is orange (pg 115)” to another character named Mizzy. I very thoroughly marked all of the awkward metaphors in my book. And he's willing to go on a quest darker, and more dangerous even, than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.įirefight had more gimmicky metaphors, like Steelheart did, with unnecessary attention drawn to them. ![]() Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic-Firefight. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Lorde is more than an apt figure for Shire to gesture too, as Lorde is something of an expert on writing about identity, race and feminism. ![]() ![]() Teaching my mother how to give birth explores the relationship between a daughter and her mother as well as touching on themes of identity, race, religion and migration. The quote, “Mother, loosen my tongue or adorn me with a lighter burden” comes from Lorde’s poem, “Call” and it is a perfect opening to Shire’s collection. The quote is by one of my favourite poet’s, Audre Lorde. I soon ordered Teaching my mother how to give birth and her poetry pamphlet did not disappoint.įrom reading the quote on the first page of the collection I was already hooked. As I’m sure many others have been, I was intrigued to find out more about the strong voice behind the poetic interludes in Beyoncé’s album. I came across the name Warsan Shire through Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade. ![]() A tale of dark and grimm book6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() I didn't hate or even dislike this book, I just thought it hit some nerves. In the end, I recommend reading the other books first, or maybe just stopping with the second one. Couldn't the mother have been doing something else? Making a tapestry or something? Why in this day with kids barely reading would we want to throw ANY negative light on reading at all? I am worried about negative connotations toward parents who read or, gosh forbid, go back to school to improve their family's lot in life. The story redeemed itself for awhile with the scene with the Devil and his grandmother (who probably need their own series) and then tanked again with the big, long battle scene featuring a bunch of return characters I forgot about from the other books. On top of that, we now need to know the other two books (which I read YEARS ago and barely remember) I found that odd in a companion book and is more in line with a sequel. Now, suddenly, we are ripped out of the story and into a pity party for people whose parents have divorced. Where it went wrong for me was the jaunt out into the real world. ![]() ![]() The parents are good and evil, the ravens are about and we have a puzzle for the main characters to figure out. I don't know why we always have to have a girl/boy combo as the MCs, but we do. ![]() While I really liked the other two books, I had some problems with this one. ![]() Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Felker-Martin’s horror chops are top-notch, with gut-churning prose zoomed in on the strangeness of human bodies and on the characters’ squeamish relationships with the physical realm, and her exploration of mental illness, trauma, and dysphoria excellently complement the grimy atmosphere. The two meet up with Robbie, a gunslinging trans man bearing his own trauma, and together the three seek safety, facing waves of feral men, heavily armed TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) hell-bent on bringing about the extinction of trans women, and the labyrinthine dynamics of their own relationships as they process their brutal histories. Felker-Martin’s daring debut imagines a world in which a plague turns men into violent cannibals and those left alive must do whatever they can do survive, including-in the case of trans women like Beth and Fran-harvesting men’s genitals to keep the disease at bay themselves. ![]() The best we could do by thi bui6/27/2023 ![]() In what Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen calls “a book to break your heart and heal it,” The Best We Could Do brings to life Thi Bui’s journey of understanding. Gordis’ seeing the demonstrations as proof of caring and love for the country is I believe an accurate assessment. This discussion in its fundamentally positive and optimistic look at Israeli history is also important a time of crisis in the country. I have great respect for Daniel Gordis and his valuable contributions to Israel and the Jewish people. I thought Israel was on the right path trying to create a Palestinian state with Arabs who really wanted peace, but the Oslo accords that turned the territories over to the terrorist Arafat destroyed any hope for peace. The wall and fence has been the only thing to give Israel some kind of rest from terror. Israel pulled out of Gaza, hoping that would advance peace. I can’t see any peace until Muslims give up trying to destroy Israel. So while I believe Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish state, and Israel will win its wars, Muslims will always be there to make sure they can’t enjoy it. Muslims worked for centuries to expel Crusaders and will work as long to expel Jews. They seem to have thought everyone was or would soon become as secular as they were so resistance to a secular Jewish state would disappear after a while. ![]() Great history!
